How to read the energy label
Why the classes changed, what the numbers mean and how to use the QR code to check every figure in the EU database.
In this guide
Why you no longer see “A+++”
Since 1 March 2021 washers, washer-dryers, dishwashers, fridges and freezers carry a label rescaled from A to G. Former A+++ models are often class C, D or E today: they did not get worse, the yardstick changed. Since 1 July 2025 tumble dryers carry the new A–G label too; ovens, hoods and air conditioners still use the old scale with pluses.
What to read, appliance by appliance
This is how to read a washing machine label: each number in the diagram matches an item.
- 1QR code: opens the model’s entry in the European EPREL database.
- 2Energy class: the black arrow shows the model’s class on the A to G scale.
- 3Energy use in kWh per 100 cycles of the Eco 40-60 programme.
- 4Rated capacity in kg in the Eco 40-60 programme.
- 5Duration of the Eco 40-60 programme at full load, in hours and minutes.
- 6Litres of water per Eco 40-60 cycle.
- 7Spin noise in dB, with its class from A to D.
- Washers and dishwashers: kWh per 100 Eco cycles, litres of water per cycle, programme duration, noise.
- Fridges and freezers: kWh per year, compartment litres, noise in dB with its A–D class.
- Air conditioners: SEER (cooling) and SCOP (heating) on split units, EER and, on models that heat, COP on portables. The higher these values, the lower the consumption.
The QR code and the EPREL database
A to G labels carry a QR code linking to the model’s entry in the European EPREL database, with the official label and the product information sheet. Labels with pluses, such as those of ovens and air conditioners, have no QR code. On Oblò, click the coloured arrow next to any price to open both.
What is one class worth?
It depends on use. A fridge runs all year: going from an old 400 kWh model to a new 150 kWh one saves about 250 kWh a year — 75 € at 0.30 €/kWh. A washer weighs less on the bill: choosing the right capacity and using the Eco programme matters more.
